The true test for softball teams comes in September. But for now, August appears to be shaping up as a tone-setter for the Pepperell Lady Dragons and Rockmart Lady Jackets.

Both squads looked impressive this week, as Pepperell pushed its early-season record to 4-0 and Rockmart improved to 8-1 with a pair of convincing victories.

The Lady Dragons downed Darlington 9-8 in a 10-inning thriller on Wednesday, then used a late-inning rally to break away from Model on Thursday.

Pepperell now sits at 1-0 in Region 7-AA South heading into the second week of full region play.

Rockmart is 2-0 in the subregion — and 8-1 overall — after using the strong pitching of Brandi Hughes to storm through the week.

Hughes worked six scoreless innings on Tuesday in Rockmart’s 6-0 win over Model.

Hughes carried a perfect game through the first five innings before her bid was broken up in the sixth inning.

Two days later, Hughes crafted a five-hit shutout in the Lady Jackets’ 8-0 win over Armuchee. Hughes also went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead the Lady Jackets’ offense.

Other highlights during the week included Calhoun’s dramatic win over Sonoraville on Thursday in a battle of Gordon County rivals.

On Tuesday, Darlington’s Taylor Sullins went 4-for-4 in the Lady Tigers’ 17-1 win over the Temple Lady Tigers.
