The Armuchee Indians came out from under the shadow of a loss in the first round of the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival Friday night at Berry College and put in some extra effort.

With a basket by Marcel Hudson at the buzzer to tie Armuchee’s game with Coosa, 52-52, the Indians took two overtime periods to defeat the Eagles, 63-58.

“Our guys really came on in overtime and played with a lot of heart,” Armuchee coach Ray Tucker said.

“(Coosa) had an interesting game last night with Model and we had Cartersville beat us up a bit so I really didn’t know what to expect from our kids.”

Hudson had five 3-pointers and led Armuchee with 19 points while T.C. Boyd and Jake Nix each had 11 for the Indians, who will play Pepperell Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Berry’s Cage Center.

Both teams scored two points in the first overtime period. Boyd and Hudson then made a 3-pointer each to lead off the second extra session that put Armuchee (3-6) in the lead for good.

Coosa (2-5), which began a back-and-forth battle for the lead in the final 1:46 of regulation, was paced by Desmond Curtis’ 18 points.

Kelvis Jefferies had 13 and Zac Hale added 11 for the Eagles, who were eliminated from the tournament.
