As much as they tried to play a game this weekend, the Unity Christian Lions just weren’t able to get it in.

After changing their game against the Paulding County Panthers from an away game to a home game and setting up the contest at Calhoun’s Phil Reeve Stadium on Saturday, Mother Nature had to have a say.

With storms moving into the area, the game, which was set to begin at noon, was delayed 45 minutes due to lightning and then called permanently in the second quarter due to inclement weather.

The game will be made up Oct. 6 at Hiram High School’s football field, the original venue before last week’s flooding and field conditions forced the two teams to move the contest.

Unity head coach Joe Curtiss said that his team wasn’t discouraged by the abrupt cancellation due to the elements.

“It’s been tough on a lot of people this year, more us than anybody because we don’t have our own facility,” Curtiss said. “But it’s stuff you’ve got to deal with and we know that, ultimately, we’ll get it done and it will be fine.”

The Lions (2-3) were behind 6-0 when officials called players off the field for a lightning delay with 7:42 left in the second quarter.

While Unity Christian was having problems with their ground game, quarterback Jackson Bishop was 3-for-3 passing for 41 yards.

Luke Lansdell and Reece Bryant were a few of the standout performers on defense for the Lions before the game was called.

“I feel like it is a pretty decent matchup between us,” Curtiss said. “We threw the ball and did some things that was nice to see.

“For both teams, the advantage is you look at film and what you did in the first quarter and go fix it.”

Unity Christian will host the NCC Crusaders on Friday at 7:30 p.m. A location for the game has yet to be determined.
