"It's always an honor to have judges from around the nation recognize the hard work and effort our crew puts into prepcentral," Jim Alred, New Media Director for News Publishing Company said. "All of our writers, photographers and videographers deliver the best high school sports coverage to our area of the state. But this award wouldn't be possible without the amazing efforts we cover each and every day from high school athletes throughout the area."
Prepcentralonline.com originally launched in August 2007, covering all prep sports in the area. The Web site covers 21 schools in Georgia and another eight in Alabama. In August 2008, the site relaunched as the online home of all high school sports covered by News Publishing Company newspapers. In the fall, the site serves as the online home of Gridiron Central, a twice weekly high school football vodcast. The show received more than 1.3 million unique views in 2008, making it the most popular vodcast in the state.
The Web site is maintained on a daily basis by sportswriters and members of the New Media Department, including Ross McDuffie, co-host and co-producer of Gridiron Central, and Tricia Dillard, videographer and director of Gridiron Central.
"From the beginning, we've made prepcentral a site where you can find out information and in-depth coverage of every prep sport; not just football, basketball and baseball," Alred said. "We've posted more than 800 prep sports videos to the site since its launch, including coverage of every prep sport from cheerleading to track to cross country to wrestling and soccer. If it happens on a court, a field, a track, a gymnasium or anywhere else, we're going to be there covering it."
The site relies heavily on sportswriters, especially the writers from the Rome News-Tribune, who often also appear on Gridiron Central's Roundtable segment to talk high school sports.
"We couldn't do this without our sportswriters. The hard work we see from David Dawson, Jeremy Stewart, Jonathan Blaylock, Shannon Fagan, Misty Martin, Scott Herpst, Brad Easterwood and others gives this site great in-depth coverage that readers can't find anywhere else," Alred said. "I know it's sometimes tough on these writers because they have multiple deadlines for the print edition and the online editions, but they do a great job of covering it all. And of course the constant contributions and hard work of Ross McDuffie, Tricia Dillard and our interns Ashley-Grace Ramocan and Christina Saul help make the site complete."
This is the second consecutive year a News Publishing Company Web Site has won a New Frontier Award. Last year
