Demetrius Green and Brandon Brown have played big roles for the Cedartown Bulldogs football team over the past three years. Now the duo will hope to do the same with Lenoir-Rhyne University.

On Wednesday, in front of about 30 people, Green and Brown signed to play for the Division II school in Hickory, N.C.

“This is a great day for them,” Cedartown coach Mark Loudermilk said. “I’m proud of both of them. They have had good careers here and have meant so much to our program.”

Both players were named to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Top 150 players in Georgia list prior to their senior season. Then the two went out and played very well all year long.

For Green, he will play outside linebacker at the next level while Brown will play wide receiver.

“It feels great,” Green said about signing. “I know I’m going to get a good education.”

Loudermilk said the 6-foot-1 playmaker has been an outstanding young man to be around.

“I can’t speak high enough about Demetrius,” Loudermilk said. “He is a great young man and for the three years I coached him he was an outstanding person to be around. He has great character and works hard in the classroom, weightroom and on the practice field.”

Green said he liked the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne and their coaches and that was his main reason for signing with them.

“I liked the surroundings,” Green said. “And they have great coaches.”

Green said he plans on majoring in either pre-engineering or sports therapy.

“I just want to thank the Lenoir-Rhyne coaches for this opportunity,” Green said. “I also want to thank my parents and coach Loudermilk.”

Brown, who had narrowed his list of schools to Navy, Lenoir-Rhyne and Shorter College, said signing a letter of intent meant a lot to him.

“I’ve been stressed,” Brown said. “It feels like a weight has been lifted off of me.”

Brown said the reason for that is because so many people kept pushing him toward Navy.

“Everyone has been wanting me to sign with Navy,” Brown said. “But I didn’t like Navy on my visit. And with Demetrius going to Lenoir-Rhyne, I just felt more comfortable.”

Loudermilk was quick to praise Brown, who is also a standout basketball player.

“I’ve coached for 21 years, all around the state,” Loudermilk said. “And I can honestly say that Brandon is one of the best athletes that I’ve ever been fortunate enough to coach. He is a great talent.”

Brown, who is undecided on his major, had a lot of people to thank for getting him to this point.

“I want to thank my mom, my grandmother, my cousin Chris Careathers and my basketball coach Benji Frazier,” Brown said. “They have all helped me a lot.”

Cedartown may have a couple more players sign this spring, but Loudermilk said National Signing Day at Cedartown High belonged to Green and Brown.

“This is their day,” Loudermilk said. “They’ve worked hard to get to this point. I wish them the best of luck at college.”
