Adairsville running back Niagel Curtis and Armuchee linebacker Jake Schmidt are today being named the Rome News-Tribune’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.

Both had starring roles in helping their respective teams register Region 7-AA crossover wins last Friday.

Curtis, a junior, rushed for 286 yards and scored four touchdowns in Adairsville’s 44-36 overtime win against Model, and Schmidt, a junior, racked up 12 tackles in Armuchee’s shocking 15-14 upset of No. 10-ranked Chattooga.

In the Adairsville game, Curtis’ final touchdown of the night was his biggest. It was a 15-yard scamper in overtime on a fourth-down play, and proved to be the game-winner.

Prior to that, he had scored one TD in each of the final three quarters — a 1-yard run in the second, a 9-yard run in the third and a key 6-yard run in the fourth for the Tigers (2-2).

The victory made for a happy return to the coaching ranks for Adarisville’s Johnny Gulledge, who was brought of out of retirement last week when the Tigers made their second coaching change of the season. (Gulledge previously coached at Adairsville from 1999-2006.)

In Summerville, Armuchee’s Schmidt helped lead his team to one of the biggest upsets in the local area in at least a decade.

Among his 14 tackles, Schmidt had one sack and two additional tackles for loss while serving as the catalyst for an Armuchee defense that limited Chattooga’s power-packed offense to one TD.

Schmidt also recovered a fumble for the surprising Armuchee squad, which improved to 4-1.

Seeing action at fullback, Schmidt had a career-high six carries for 40 yards, including a touchdown run during the stirring win.
