Perry, a junior, rushed for 176 yards with two touchdowns in Chattooga’s 48-22 win over Cedartown, and Johnson, a sophomore, racked up nine tackles and intercepted a pass during Model’s 15-7 victory over rival Armuchee.
In Chattooga’s victory, Perry scored on a two-point conversion run in the first quarter, and then broke loose for touchdown runs of 40 and 63 yards in the third period.
His efforts highlighted a 370-yard rushing performance by the Indians, who trailed 22-8 at the end of the first quarter before scoring 40 unanswered points over the final 36 minutes to improve to 3-0.
Perry, a member of the Rome News-Tribune preseason All-Area team, averaged 13.5 yards per carry on his 13 rushing attempts in the win.
In Shannon, Johnson picked off one pass, broke up two more and also caused a fumble to help Model pull out a homecoming victory against Armuchee in the Region 7-AA opener for both teams.
Johnson’s defensive heroics enabled the Devils (3-1, 1-0) to knock off their cross-town rivals for the sixth consecutive season.
Model has now won three straight games after suffering a season-opening loss to Gordon Central.
This week, Model and Chattooga will each be involved in 7-AA crossover games — Chattooga hosts Armuchee, and Model visits Adairsville.
