It’s only two weeks old, but the 2008 season has already started to earn distinction as “The Year of the Turnarounds.”
Armuchee, Sonoraville and Gordon Central — three programs that posted a combined record of 4-26 last season — are each off to 2-0 starts, and the three teams have created considerable excitement in their respective communities.
The enthusiasm could reach an even higher level this weekend if Armuchee and Sonoraville can gain victories on the road against winless foes.
Armuchee, off to its best start since 1997, travels to Dade County to play the Wolverines (0-1) in a 7-AA crossover game, while Sonoraville heads north to tangle with Southeast Whitfield (0-2) in a non-region contest.
Gordon Central, which went winless last season, is idle this week. The Warriors will have to wait until Sept. 19 — when they host Trion — to try to extend their unblemished mark.
Several other undefeated teams from Greater Rome will be in action this Friday. The list includes a match-up of unbeatens in Cedartown, where the Bulldogs (2-0) are hosting Coosa (1-0) in a non-region game.
Also, the No. 5-ranked Pepperell Dragons (2-0) host Villa Rica (2-0) on Homecoming Night in Lindale.
Chattooga, also unbeaten, is off this week.
