Heritage didn’t win its season opener on Friday against the visiting Sonoraville Phoenix.
However, the Generals did score a touchdown.
Brad McDonald scored the first touchdown in the school’s history on a 2-yard run with 3:30 to play in Heritage’s 42-6 loss.
The play came in front of a crowd of more than 5,000 who packed the new stadium.
Heritage Head Coach Tim James was proud of his team’s effort.
“I think we got better tonight,” he said. “I don’t think the score necessarily indicates that. But we did."
With a roster of eight seniors, 11 juniors and 62 underclassmen, James understands that his team will have more learning experiences to endure. But, he said he saw enough positives to believe the Generals are “headed in the right direction.”
"If you look at where we were last week and where we are now, I think we’ve made great strides...we're going back to work this week and we're going to get better.”
James said he thought the offense was just “a hair away from clicking, and the defense is still having to stay on the field too long.”
Sonoraville Head Coach Chuck King said he was pleased with his team’s performance. He watched as Phoenix recorded its second win in the school’s three-year history.
“All we’re worried about is how many wins we can get this year he said. “ And I think we’re going t get more than one.”
King said in time he believed the Generals would be a competitive program because of the leadership qualities and knowledge of the game James has.
“A lot of times they’re going to come up on the wrong side of the scoreboard,” King said. “But they are going to learn how to fight and learn how to play.”
Sonoraville got the ball rolling early with quarterback Y.J. Glover.
The senior scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards in the first quarter. He then ran in the first two-point conversion after the first score and connected with senior Taylor Sims for the second two-point conversion.
Sonoraville scored again with 6:50 to play in the second quarter on a 30-yard run by senior Tevarious Washington . The TD extended the Phoenix lead to 22-0. Heritage’s Brad McDonald blocked the extra point attempt.
However, the Phoenix didn’t stop there.
Glover went to work again, scoring on the first drive of the second half. His 1 yard run and two-point-conversion made the score 30-0. A 33-yard pass to sophomore Tyler Brookshire highlighted the drive.
Freshman Shaqeal McAfee put up six more points with 2:37 to play in the third quarter. He scored on a 14 yard run after a short drive. The drive was highlighted by a 26 yard run by Washington.

Mansfield, of course Heritage is going to have a rough year. It's the first year of a brand new school. Also, us fans are at football games to have fun, not to expect a win.
By the way, old schools like LFO and Ringgold haven't done well in football recently either, so you can't talk about big kids getting wins all the time.
confused, where's the point in renovating schools and their programs when they become overcrowded anyway? You are obviously really "confused" as to why Heritage was built.
Don't let ignorance stand in the way of a good argument.
"The students will suffer, many will probably be injured by bigger, older athletes on other teams. Fans will become discouraged when the team is destroyed on the field week after week. What will happen when they play a good team?" Your foresight and ability to predict the future astounds me. I bet you have made a fortune in the stock market and day trading. The sky is not falling.
Good Day
Thanks
