It’s been a while since David Humphreys has stepped on to a high school football field as a head coach, but he’s got a lot to offer the Trion Bulldogs as they, along with the rest of the area schools, begin practice today for the upcoming season.
Humphreys has been away from high school football since leaving Rome High at the end of the 2004 season.
After working as a coach in arena football, Humphreys will now make his return this season as Trion’s high school football head coach.
“I’m excited about being back,” he said. “It’s been a blast to be back. I didn’t realize how much I missed it.”
Humphreys, who led the Rome Wolves to four straight region titles and three appearances in the Class AAAA state quarterfinals, has been getting his team ready all summer, and the team will surely benefit from having his experience on the sideline.
“They’ve got a great tradition here even though they’ve been down for a while,” he said. “That challenge is exciting to me.”
The Bulldogs will begin practice today at 3:30 p.m.
Two schools are doing a little something extra to get themselves ready for the season.
After Calhoun’s first day of practice, beginning at 4 p.m. today, the team will head out on the road Saturday for a football camp held at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn.
Cedartown will try a different approach next week, as the school will host a football mini camp for the team next Friday through Sunday. Both Calhoun’s and Cedartown’s first-day practices will take place in the afternoon.
Rockmart’s practice will begin at 3:45 p.m. and head coach Dan Duff sees the potential of a team that is full of experienced players.
“We’re ready to get going,” he said. “We’ve got 24 seniors coming back. If they go out and stay healthy, we hope to have a good year.”
Two more schools have opted for a cooler time to practice. With hot weather sometimes posing major problems for football practice, Sonoraville and Gordon Central opted to push practices back to 6 p.m.
Other schools practicing today are Adairsville at 3:45 p.m. and Chattooga at 3 p.m.
With students not yet returning to school at Chattooga, head coach John Starr hopes to get in multiple practices over the next few days.
Which is just what his team wants.
“It seems like the off season is so long,” Starr said. “Everyone’s tired of preparing for it and they want to do something different.
“It’s time to get down to some real football and start smacking some people around.”
